Managing your Heap

Managing your Heap

You can just leave your heap alone for 6 months and you probably get good compost, but some management will help improve the compost and prevent problems

1. In an ideal world, and if you feel fit, you would take off the compost bin and put it next to the heap, and TURN over the compost from the heap into the new position. Otherwise, the top and sides will be less well composted, and may have to be composted again
2. check the heap every month that it is neither too wet or too dry - add more diluted urine to keep it rotting
3. If there are a lot of flies, make sure that there is no fruit near the top - bury it under other materials
