Compost Materials

Many people ask us for advice about "the right materials for making compost":-

Materials used to make compost

There are 4 main types of materials used to make compost
1. grass cuttings and green weeds
2. kitchen waste - pods, stems, inedible bits of veg and fruit
3. woody materials, ideally shredded so that they break down more easily
4. shredded paper, newspaper torn with the grain, torn up cardboard

These can be divided into the Greens and Browns

grass, weeds and most kitchen waste are GREENS, they decay very quickly, leaving little behind, except somettimes a slushy stinky mess
woody stuff and paper are BROWNS, which decay very slowly, and can rob nitrogen from the soil if they are not full broken down
Cooked food, metal, wood, dandelion and ground elder roots, cat and dog droppings, should NOT be included in the compost heap
Some things like hedge clippings are both green AND brown - part green, part woody
