Many people ask us for advice about "the right way to make compost", and this is part of it :-

Using your Compost

If you make compost in spring, it should be ready in autumn, and compost made in autumn should be ready in spring.

The doors in plastic compost bins are a nuisance - it may be better to use a spade as a lever to loosen the compost bin, and then lift the bin right off the heap so you can dig right into the compost

Not all the woody stuff will be fully broken down, and this can cause nitrogen robbery in the soil. In an ideal world, we would sieve them out, and also any uncomposted bits, and put them back in the heap for another season.

Sieved compost will be very fine and suitable for use as potting compost, but remember, there may be weed seeds in it if the compost has not reached temperatures above 50°C !!

Most people dig in their compost into their vegetable garden, or spread it around the chosen plants that need feeding - worms will rapidly carry it down into the earth !
