Nature of Risk |
Full Description of Risk and steps to avoid
risk |
| Power Lead | There is a risk of cutting the power lead. The user should be especially careful to avoid damaging the lead, and any damage should be reported to PartnerCHIP immediately. We have supplied an electrical circuit breaker for use with the shredder, and if this is used, the danger to the operator will be minimised. The circuit breaker may conflict with other domestic safety measures - please contact us if this is the case |
| Bystanders | We recommend that only the operator should go within a 6ft
radius of the shredder while it is operating. The operator should wear the
eye and ear protectors provided. Bystanders should remain at least 6ft away.
In any case, persons under the age of 16 should not operate the machine or go within a 6ft radius of it. |
| Water in electrical system | If the shredder is used in heavy rain, there is a risk of water entering the mechanisms and causing damage to the shredder, and unpredictable effects on the operator. If it is raining, please use the shredder under cover in a shed, garage or greenhouse. If this is not possible, please re-book for another day at no charge |
| Stones and Metal | If stones or metal enter the shredder blades, these could cause catastrophic damage. This especially applies to metal and to flints. You must take every precaution against this happening, and you must wear the safety glasses provided. You will also be liable for any damage to the machine |
| Mechanical Problems | If the shredder jams, it may auto-reverse to clear itself, or you can switch it to reverse and remove the jam, using a strong stick. You must not take apart the shredder, or attempt to put your hand inside it either from the bottom or the top. If you do any of these things you will be in great danger, and we will not be liable for any injuries you suffer |
| Branch too large | The maximum size of branch which can be shredded is 3.5 cm. If you try to shred larger branches, you may damage either yourself or the machine, and in either case you will be liable yourself. The shredder works better on recently cut wood - we recommend that you burn older and larger branches, or make a small environment pile for mice, hedgehogs and fungi. |
| Hearing | This shredder produces noise at about 89 decibels. In case this causes you discomfort, we recommend that you use the ear protector that we have provided. If the shredder is very noisy, please let us know |
| Catastrophic failure | If the shredder begins to make strange noises, there may be a risk of catastrophic failure. Please turn it off immediately and let us know. The risk of this is thought to be minimal, and a fracture of the machinery should in any case be contained within the machine and should not endanger any bystanders |
| Hands | We have provided a pair of gloves so that the operator does not damage their hands. Do not under any circumstances or for any reason try to put your hands inside the machine while it is running |
| Back | We have provided some plastic sacks and a plastic container for use with the shreddings. Please do not lift more than you are capable of - make several trips instead ! |
| Hair and clothing | Long hair or clothing could get dragged into the shredder. Please do not wear hair or clothing in a way which gives any risk of this possibility |
Please sign the Conditions document that you have read and understood the risks
involved
The shredder is not inherently dangerous as long as the above precautions
are observed !!
